The San Antonio Fire Department’s arson bureau made two arrests on Wednesday, June 22, for arson in connection with two recent fires that occurred on the Eastside.

Kathryn Bassignana, 34, and Cruz Rivas, 37, were charged with arson for two separate fires on the Eastside. Bassignana was charged in connection with a fire at the Friedrich Building at 1617 E Commerce Street in late March. Rivas was charged for a fire that occurred at an abandoned two-story home at 901 E Crockett Street in May, KSAT reported.

SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington says that details about how both people started each fire are still under investigation, but both people were houseless.

The arrests come after Fire Chief Charles Hood told residents at a town hall in April that there was no serial arsonist involved in a string of fires that occurred on the Eastside, KENS 5 reported

From mid-March to April, six fires occurred in the Dignowity Hill and Denver Heights neighborhoods, the Express-News reported. One of those fires destroyed an upcoming townhome project on Swiss Street led by local residential developer Terramark Urban Homes.

Last week, a fire at a home on the Northside continued to push San Antonio’s number of fatal fires in 2022 to 12, surpassing 2021 numbers and putting the city on track to possibly double those numbers if they continue at the current rate. SAFD said that the fatal fires that occurred this year were preventable.
