Another one bites the dust on Rainey Street, the Sunday Funday capital of Austin, and, according to one business owner in the district, either “the worst or second-worst street in the city.” Nevertheless, the enormously popular, formerly residential street is losing local favorite Reina for a familiar reason.

“Condo’s,” Reina posted on Instagram, in response, to the surprise of exactly no one. Nearby Container Bar and Bungalow quickly closed in March to make way for The Modern, a 55-story high-rise condo.

“Reina on Rainey is irreplaceable,” the bar posted on Instagram. “This city is changing, and though we must embrace the change, it doesn’t mean we can’t live it up like the good ole times until it’s here.”

The bar will close next month. Reina mentioned that it will keep its fans abreast of its plans to “f**k s**t up until [sic] Septebmer 11.”

“We knew this was coming and that our days were numbered. It still couldn’t prepare us for the sadness we’re feeling,” Reina continued in its post.

Reina opened at 78 Rainey St, Austin, TX 78701, in January 2020, an inopportune time for any bar or restaurant to gain momentum with the COVID-19 pandemic looming. Coming out of the pandemic, the bar ramped up its live music efforts, becoming a popular spot to see DJs on Rainey Street and offering table service.
