Brandeis No. 1 in Texas high school volleyball preseason poll – mySA

Defending state champion Brandeis High School begins the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the Class 6A poll. Brandeis is coming off a season where it went 47-2 and defeated Keller 3-2 in the Class 6A final to win its first state championship in 2021.

Brandeis was the San Antonio Express-News’ Girls high school team of the year. Head coach Maddie Williams was named the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Class 6A Coach of the Year.

Championship game MVP Jalyn Gibson was named TSWA Class 6A Player of the Year. Gibson and second team all-state setter Carlee Pharris have graduated and will play college volleyball at Texas Christian University. The duo also earned All-America honors.

Brandeis returns senior outside hitter Emma Halstead, who earned TSWA honorable mention all-state honors last year.

Reagan High School landed at No. 6 in the Class 6A poll. Last season, Reagan defeated Cibolo Steele 3-0 in the bi-district round, but lost 3-1 to Lake Travis in the area round. The Lady Rattlers finished the year 38-10.

From the Texas Hill Country, Dripping Springs is ranked No. 2 in the Class 6A poll. The Tigers finished last year at 21-6, advancing to the Class 5A regional final before falling 3-0 to New Braunfels Canyon. Dripping Springs moved up to Class 6A in the UIL’s realignment.

New Braunfels Canyon High School is ranked No. 4 in the Class 5A poll after last season’s state tournament appearance. The Cougarettes went 43-9 last year, winning the Class 5A Region IV championship before falling 3-2 to Grapevine in the state semifinals.

Canyon returns setter Meagan Hawkins, who earned second team TSWA all-state honors last season.

Johnson City is ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A poll. Johnson City advanced to the Class 2A regional semifinals last season with wins over Three Rivers, Falls City, and a bye in bi-district.
