Elon Musk wants to create ‘based AI’ to fight ChatGPT’s ‘wokeness’

Since ChatGPT was unveiled in late November of last year, the artificial intelligence chatbot has remained a daily point of contention. Investors are crawling out of their quarter-zip fleeces for it. It’s going to take our — mine specifically — jobs.

But it has one obscenely rich cultural critic: Elon Musk.

Per a report in The Information, Musk has called on artificial intelligence researchers recently in an effort to combat “woke AI,” possibly by creating a competitor to popular chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI.

Notably, Musk, alongside Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and other venture capitalist-slash-tech professionals started OpenAI in 2015 with $1 billion in pledges. Musk resigned from the board in 2018, as the company said, because of a potential conflict of interest between the non-profit and his electric car company, Tesla. His creation turned on him, the Dr. Frankenstein or, more aptly here, Miles Dyson that he is.

Musk harped on a perceived “wokeness” in AI almost immediately after ChatGPT dropped, but it’s unclear what exactly he is afraid of, other than its apparent inability to use a racial slur to save the world in an extremely normal and plausible hypothetical scenario cooked up by a reporter for the Washington Free Beacon.

Musk is concerned.

But I had to know how ChatGPT felt about the rumors swirling about it being too woke for primetime. I asked “is ChatGPT woke?” It, of course, had a response.

As an AI language model, I do not have personal beliefs or opinions, and I strive to remain impartial and objective in all my interactions. My purpose is to provide helpful and informative responses to your questions, while adhering to ethical and moral principles. I do not have a stance on the concept of “wokeness” or any related issues. My goal is to provide accurate and useful information to the best of my ability based on my training data.

I also asked the chatbot if it had heard about Musk creating “based AI” to “combat wokeness.” ChatGPT responded:

To the best of my knowledge, there is no official statement or evidence to suggest that Elon Musk is creating “based artificial intelligence” because he believes that AI language models like me are “too woke.”

Looks like ChatGPT is already doing my job for me, woke or not.
