As the Dallas Cowboys’ kicker Brett Maher struggled yet again in another playoff game, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott decided to take to Twitter to troll Cowboys fans. Abbott ribbed the struggling kicker with a tweet on Sunday night, January 22, that read: “I swear, I can kick as good as the Dallas Cowboys kicker.”

The tweet was very tongue-in-cheek given that Abbott must use a wheelchair after a 1984 accident where a tree weakened by a storm fell on him and injured his spine, paralyzing him. Abbott was referring to Maher missing another extra-point kick — after missing four the week prior — in the Cowboys’ NFC Divisional Round game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. The Cowboys lost 19-12.

Cowboys fans (and people who are not fans of the Abbott) were not having it on Twitter. The replies rolled in immediately and they were pretty scathing.

The top reply was from a San Antonio-based account BOXING n BBQ, which replied with, “You can’t even kick on the light switch for us in winter.”

Oof. The account was referring to the 2021 winter storm where high demand on Texas’ overlooked power grid led to rolling blackouts, leaving thousands without power in freezing weather.

Other replies commented on Abbott’s time as governor as he enters his third term after being reelected last year.

Abbott did garner some support for his tweet, mostly from GOP figureheads like former National Rifle Association spokesperson Dana Loesch

But you can see the more replies criticizing Abbott’s joke below.
