A traffic nightmare is unfolding in Austin after a fiery overnight crash involving an 18-wheeler. A portion of Interstate 35 near Texas 45, south of Austin, is still closed in both directions.

TxDOT crews are working to clear the roadway. Traffic is being pushed onto the frontage roads, but it’s still slow-moving.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the semi-truck caught fire after crashing into a median in the southbound lanes of the 12600 block of I-35 South. Austin Fire Department and Manchaca Fire crews responded to the scene around 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20.

At least one person with potentially serious injuries was taken to the hospital, according to a social media post from the Austin Fire Department.

Debris from the tractor-trailer is littered across lanes in both directions. Austin police and the Texas Department of Transportation are working to clear the area.
