Kid-friendly The Pigpen teases return to San Antonio with new truck – mySA

It looks like fans of one of San Antonio’s go-to brunch spots—  and those fond of the perennially messy Charles Shultz comic book character of the same name —  may soon have something to look forward to.

The Pigpen, the Mahncke Park neighborhood watering hole essentially built outside of Smoke Shack, was initially opened by the barbecue joint’s owner Chris Conger in 2016.

For over four years, they mixed drinks, hosted live music, and served hearty brunches featuring offerings like brisket-garnished bloody marys those surrounding the Broadway Corridor.

An outdoor area allowed kids to run around while parents chowed down on burgers, relaxed with margaritas and regularly enjoyed live music, including an annual Townes Vann Zandt tribute show.

After a prolonged, year-long closure, The Pigpen appears to be making a revamped comeback.  Earlier this week, San Antonio-based mobile food truck company Cruising Kitchens teased Pigpen’s return.

“San Antonio, I hope you’re ready for the return of @the_Pigpen_bar – I know I am!! After fighting many obstacles my man, Chris Conger (@smokeshack), is bringing the phenomenal eats back!” wrote Cruising Kitchens CEO and President Cameron Davies in a social media post. “Be on the lookout for a major announcement coming soon! I can’t wait for everyone to see what CK cooked up for the return of this badass establishment!

In addition to the big hint, Davies also shared photos of a new Pigpen on wheels, featuring a pristine new truck with chrome interiors and teal and wood exterior paneling.

At this time it is unclear if the previous location will resume operating or if Pigpen will begin its new life nomadically or somewhere new. Still, it’s a full circle moment for the Smoke Shack brand which launched as a food truck in 2012.

Chris Conger and Cruising Kitchens did not immediately respond to MySA’s request for comment.

Find it: Pigpen at 106 Pershing Ave., San Antonio, TX 78209.
