On a per-share basis, the Radnor, Pennsylvania-based company said it had net income of $1.34. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $2.23 per share.
The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.35 per share.
The insurance and retirement business posted revenue of $5.1 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $4.64 billion, beating Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.46 billion.
