NISD teacher allegedly called student ‘homophobic’ slur, family says

A mother of a high school student at Northside Independent School District has claimed a teacher called her 16-year-old son an “inappropriate and homophobic” slur. The parent told MySA the incident occurred at Sonia Sotomayor High School, a Northside ISD campus that opened in August 2022.

The mother, who decided to remain anonymous to protect her child, said the teacher at her son’s school called him a “p*nch j*t*” — or f**king homosexual in English — after catching her teen with his pants low. The mother said her son looked around to see if anyone else heard and saw a school official nearby. However, she added that the school official denied hearing the teacher say anything when she said it happened on January 23.

When the incident took place, the mother said her son called her crying and upset. She said no one was believing him and asked for her to pick him up. She noted, “my son already deals with depression and anxiety so when something happens, it’s like 10 times as big as it should be … but in any case, it’s not OK and the teacher shouldn’t have made those inappropriate and homophobic comments.”

Northside ISD told MySA that campus and district officials are aware of the incident and the matter is still under investigation.

The district’s reported response

On the day the incident occurred, the mother of the student said she called the campus, talked to the vice principal, and was told the teacher denied saying the comments. She later went to the school to make a statement and file a complaint, she said. At the end of the day, she said the principal called her, saying the teacher reportedly admitted to saying the slur.

“The principal said the teacher was having a bad day after a staff member passed away,” she said. “But nothing constitutes the way the teacher spoke to my child. By no means am I saying my child is perfect, but the teacher could have disciplined him in another way instead of saying what he did. He’s a grown man talking to a child like that.”

Northside ISD told MySA that the campus and district officials are aware of the incident and the matter is still under investigation. The district said, “The campus will not tolerate inappropriate behavior on the part of staff or students and will take appropriate action.”

The mother said she has not heard back as of Thursday, February 2, after filing a complaint with the district on January 23. She said her son was given four days of lunch detention as he responded back after the slur comment, calling the teacher a “b*tch.”

“By all means discipline [her son], but I haven’t heard back about the teacher and the consequences,” she said. “…If we’re adults, we should be better. It just doesn’t make sense to me on any level. We talk about zero tolerance with bullying in public schools but when teachers do it, there’s no follow through?”
