San Antonio breweries release new beer honoring military – mySA

San Antonio is home to more than 15 local breweries and that means new seasonal releases are always around the corner. Some local breweries are honoring military men and women in some special upcoming releases, and others are just trying to help beat the summer heat. Here’s some worth giving a try.

Black Laboratory Brewing released a small batch seltzer perfect for laying by the pool this summer on Wednesday, June 22, called the Blue Coconut Hard Soda. The description is in the name: a blue seltzer with coconut flavors aimed at whisking drinkers away to a deserted island, the brewery said. The Blue Coconut Hard Soda is available on draft and in cans at the Black Laboratory Brewing taproom located at 1602 E Houston Suite 109. Their hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Veteran-owned Longtab Brewing is releasing two summer special brews, one this weekend and one on July 4. This week’s new release pays homage to the heart and soul of the brewpub, which also operates as a coffee bar and restaurant that honors the history, culture, and veterans of the U.S. Army Special Forces.

Starting Friday, June 24, San Antonians can visit the brewery to try First in Asia, a Golden Ale, named and released in honor of the 65th anniversary of the 1st Special Forces Group. “First in Asia” was the motto of the Airborne 1st Special Forces Group that was tasked with operations in the Asia-Pacific theater starting June 24, 1957, at Camp Drake in Japan and the outfit has continued work in Iraq and Afghanistan.

First in Asia will be available in cans and on draft starting at noon on Friday, as well as available to order online for delivery. Longtab Brewing is located at 4700 Timco West Suite 105 and is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, noon to 10 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Alamo Beer Company announced a party on July 3 to celebrate the release of the Homefront IPA. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Soldier’s Angels, a non-profit that supports deployed service members, military families, and veterans.

There will be plenty of beer and live music at Alamo Beer Company from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The brewery is located at 415 Burnet Street.

The Homefront IPA is a recipe crafted through Solider’s Angels’ Hops for Heroes, an annual campaign that gets craft breweries from around the country to come together, brew beer, and support military families. Alamo Beer Company and Karbach Brewing in Houston are the only two Texas breweries to participate in the program this year.

“At Alamo Beer we are big on community and giving back as much as we possibly can,” said Alamo Beer Company Brewmaster Gregg Spickler. “A lot of our staff are veterans, some of our brewers, some of our sales staff, management and so forth. Especially being here in San Antonio, Military City USA. And so many of our clients, our customers and just about everyone we do business with seems to have ties to the military.”

Alamo Beer Company is located at 202 Lamar Street and is open from 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
