San Antonio Business Journal Features TAAHP Past President Debra Guerrero – TAAHP

TAAHP Past President Debra Guerrero was recently profiled in the San Antonio Business Journal for her accomplishments and journey from her service as San Antonio Councilwoman to becoming a pillar in the affordable housing development community.

Debra Guerrero has always had a passion for improving the communities of San Antonio, and she thrives at bringing partners together to accomplish positive results for both the community and the investor.

Debra met Dan Markson in the late 90’s, while she was a newly elected member of the San Antonio City Council. They became fast friends and colleagues as Markson began to create a legacy for himself with the NRP Group, leveraging federal affordable housing programs with low-income tax credits to fund mixed-income housing projects across South Texas.

Markson was an inspiration to Guerrero, and in 2004 he convinced her to join the NRP team leading government affairs for affordable housing activities and helping the developer build a regional brand. Since then, Guerrero has been instrumental to the growth of NRP, and today she represents the developer as the Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Governmental Relations.

Guerrero is proud to be a part of the legacy that Markson created and says, “I got to marry my love of policy and my love of the community with a professional career while learning from an incredible and dynamic mentor.”

Sadly, Dan Markson, passed away in 2019, but Debra and her team have continued to charge forward in his vision of bringing mixed-income community housing to San Antonio and South Texas. The NRP Group has developed more than 18,000 residential units in Texas, and they recently just finished building a new apartment community along the San Pedro corridor, just north of downtown. Aptly named, The Markson, the development is a tribute to their visionary leader.

Debra is a native San Antonian. She grew up on the Southeast side of town, and earned her undergraduate degree at St. Mary’s University, and both her MPA and J.D. at U.T. Austin.
