Somerset Junior High School cafe teaches life skills to students

VON ORMY, Texas – A program in Somerset ISD is teaching students different skills for real-world job opportunities.

Students part of the life-skills class at Somerset Junior High School have been preparing something special at the Bulldog Cafe.

“Every Friday we would normally set up for teachers again. So, we sell coffee, tacos, pastries, any kind of breakfast thing that we might think of. The kids research everything. They put it all together,” Abraham Alvarez, life skills instructor for Somerset Junior High School said.

The bistro started last year and this year students began delivering food and coffee to teachers.

“It teaches them customer service, puts a smile on their face, has them interact with other individuals,” Keith Higginbotham, transition coordinator for Somerset ISD said.

The next phase of the program is to partner with local businesses, to provide job opportunities for students.
