Taco Cabana, the fast-casual San Antonio Tex-Mex chain with an assortment of 12 different types of margaritas, has lived many lives since it was founded in 1978 by Felix Stehling. On Monday, September 19, the beloved chain announced the arrival of a new restaurant with an entirely unfamiliar design.
The new makeover and opening arrives in tandem with Taco Cabana’s 44th birthday. While the restaurant is now open for business, the chain officially makes another rotation around the sun on Wednesday, September 21.
Notably, no two Taco Cabana’s seem to be quite the same. The original Taco Cabana, still operating on San Pedro and Hildebrand is a quiet and subdued grey and with yellow accents. Other locations across town, once fully embracing pepto bismol-inspired exteriors, have shifted in presentation over the years.
This new design honors Taco Cabana’s pink legacy by featuring the iconic color in the modernized, primarily black, exterior. New branding elements and lighting features are also on full display.

“It’s an exciting time for Taco Cabana,” said Ulyses Camacho, Taco Cabana’s chief operating officer in a press release. “We’ve been working on a new modern TC conversion prototype design for more than a year now. It was important for us to retain TC heritage and tradition with our signature pink color, the use of papel and our iconic TC logo oval. To launch the design in our hometown of San Antonio and celebrate our birthday at the same time is such a great moment for the Brand.”
In addition to sporting the new look and the familiar selection of margaritas and Tex-Mex staples, the new location will also revive the in-house salsa bar in the dining area.
The new design was done in partnership with Hospitality Design Group led by Robert L. Herbage, according to the release. Construction for the conversion design was led by Kamron Loyd.
“We’re so proud to be celebrating our 44th birthday and honoring our TC heritage with this restaurant conversion opening,” said Taco Cabana CEO Anil Yadav in a press statement.
You can dine-in at the new location from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, or drive-thru Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.
