Your Turn, Sept. 26: There are bigger immigration issues for sheriff to investigate – San Antonio Express-News

Re: “Progressives threaten climate success,” Business, Sept. 18:

Chris Tomlinson’s commentary on progressives threatening climate success is a brilliant assessment of our country’s situation. By failing to compromise on fellow Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin’s effort to reform the government permitting process, and by opposing expanded mining for critical minerals and the building of factories, 76 House Democrats condemned Manchin’s proposal.

They have set us up for geopolitical blackmail. Today, we rely on China for most of our solar panels, Chile for lithium and Congo for copper. These resources must be produced within our borders.

Thank you, Tomlinson, for your most accurate assessment.

Will we remain united?

Queen Elizabeth II is dead, and her passing marks the end of an era.

The monarchy is a symbol of Britain’s longevity and of unity. As the song goes, “there will always be an England,” and Queen Elizabeth helped to instill that sense of loyalty to what is beyond this moment.

Some frequently used words to describe the queen were duty, dignity and decency. President Joe Biden shares those traits, but our former president does not.

The United States appears to be in a free fall — falling from grace, from world leadership, from democracy. Will there always be a united United States?

Sheriff shoots messenger

Instead of Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar grandstanding and launching an investigation into the migrant flight to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., perhaps he should investigate why President Joe Biden ignores enforcing existing immigration law.

Instead of shooting the messenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for having the audacity to highlight a real problem that affects Texas, maybe the sheriff should focus on the source of the problem.
