One baby remains in critical condition at the hospital as of Monday following a devastating car crash at a Scenic Oaks daycare and preschool last week that authorities say killed a teacher and injured others.

The crash, which officials called a “very tragic accident,” sent a holiday-season jolt through the community. Alexia Rosales, a 22-year-old teacher at ExcellED Montessori Plus Daycare Preschool, was killed after she was pinned under a car that crashed into the fencing of a play area, and five 1-year-olds were hospitalized.

Four of those babies have since been released, with only Mkaya Amrani still receiving treatment. She remains in critical condition, according to loved ones.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the crash wasn’t believed to have involved intoxication. It unfolded after a holiday performance at the ExcellED Montessori Plus Daycare Preschool, located along the Interstate 10 West Frontage Road near Ranchland View.

“Both cars ended up hitting a fence, where on the other side several children were playing and one faculty member was there as well,” Salazar said.
