FORT WORTH, Texas — One person died and another person was hospitalized in critical condition after a police chase ended in a crash in Fort Worth early Saturday, officials say.

Officers were called about a vehicle driving the wrong way on Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards shortly before 3 a.m. Jan. 3 and tried to stop the vehicle, according to a press release.

The people in the vehicle didn’t pull over and instead made a U-turn and fled the location, police say.

Shortly thereafter, another officer found the suspect vehicle and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled again, lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the 1500 block of E. 4th Street, officials say.

The passenger was extricated from the vehicle but was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene despite officers’ attempts to render aid, according to a press release.

The driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, officials say. Neither the passenger nor the driver have been identified.

The investigation into the crash remains active.
