#1 is back! Astros lean into Carlos Correa homecoming with jersey reveal, highlight reel

Correa will start at third base against the Red Sox tonight at Fenway Park, where he’ll be reunited with longtime friend and former teammate Alex Bregman.

HOUSTON — The Astros’ blockbuster trade to bring Carlos Correa back to H-Town still has the baseball world and Houston fans buzzing.

The three-time All-Star shortstop spent his first seven years in Houston, where he played his best ball and became one of the most beloved players in franchise history.

Tonight, Correa will start at third base against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, where he’ll be reunited with longtime friend and former teammate Alex Bregman.

“It’s going to be electric,” Correa told MLB.com. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I cannot wait to get started with the guys again. I’m coming home and there’s only one goal in mind and that’s to win championships.”

The Astros are leaning into Correa’s homecoming on social media with career highlights and a reveal of his No. 1 jersey.

Correa was the top pick in the 2012 amateur draft and part of the homegrown core that helped the Astros go from the league’s laughingstock to perennial contenders. He helped lead the team to six playoff appearances, three American League pennants, and its first World Series title in 2017 — a championship tainted by a sign-stealing scandal.

The 30-year-old Correa was named to two of his three All-Star Games while with the Astros and won a Gold Glove Award in 2021.

Charismatic and an unquestioned leader in the clubhouse, Correa is expected to help energize a team that has managed to remain atop the division standings despite struggling with multiple injuries.

General Manager Dana Brown said Correa will stay at third with shortstop Jeremy Peña close to returning from the injured list. All-Star third-baseman Isaac Paredes is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury.

“This guy is a warrior,” Brown said when asked about the position change. “He’s a team-first guy and we had no doubts knowing the human being and the makeup that he would make that adjustment.”

For his part, Correa is happy with the change.

“I’ve been wanting to play third base for the past couple of years, but it wasn’t happening in Minnesota,” Correa told MLB.com. “We were waiting for a shortstop to come in, and now that I get to play third base, it would be great for me at this stage of my career.”

He’s also thrilled to reunite with second baseman Jose Altuve, who is the Astros’ longest-tenured player and one of his closest friends on the team.
