11-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition winner Miki Sudo, #4-ranked James Webb set Guinness World Record at Taco Cabana in San Antonio

The host of KENS 5’s food challenge series was an official judge as several of the top competitive eaters in the world duked it out for two Guinness World Records.

SAN ANTONIO — Taco Cabana held their inaugural World Taco Eating Championship on Saturday in celebration of their 47th anniversary. The competition saw some of the world’s top-ranked competitive eaters go head to head right here in San Antonio!

The contest was put on by Major League Eating (MLE), who host events like the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and others around the world. Some of the best competitive eaters from across the land like the #1-ranked female competitive eater Miki Sudo, #3-ranked Geoffrey Esper, #4-ranked James Webb and even the #1 competitive eater in Africa and tallest athlete ever in MLE, 6-foot-9 Gideon Oji also made the trip to the Alamo City!

Whoever ate the most bean and cheese tacos in 10 minutes wins the top prize in a $10,000 purse, which was dispersed as follows:

  • 1st – $5,000
  • 2nd – $2,500
  • 3rd – $1,250
  • 4th – $600

But before that competition, the participants battled it out in a high-octane minute of bean and cheese gore to claim the Guinness World Record for the most bean and cheese tacos eaten in a minute.

The host of our food challenge series “Grub or Flub,” Luke Whitney was selected by Taco Cabana and Major League Eating to be a Guinness World Record judge for the event.

Whitney was selected to watch over Sudo to make sure she followed all the rules for the entirety of the minute-long competition, which included a rule where they could only use one hand and eat one taco at a time before asking the judge if they were clear to move on to the next.

After a brief deliberation between the judges and the Guinness World Record adjudicator, Sudo and Webb came out victorious after each of them put down nine tacos.

Then the competition for all the marbles began.

After 10 long minutes of gruelingly shoveling bean and cheese tacos in their faces, some on their shirts, Esper came out on top after putting down a total of 51 tacos. Webb finished in a close second with 48 1/2 tacos eaten, while Sudo put down 31 1/2 tacos for a 4th place finish!
