The suspect, Mark Criollo, faces charges related to the shooting death of a 19-year-old Hondo teen on Sunday morning.
SAN ANTONIO — Law enforcement’s efforts to arrest a murder suspect during a prolonged overnight standoff ended when he was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. Monday, the culmination of a nearly 12-hour standoff involving SWAT personnel in east San Antonio.
Mark Criollo, 29, is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Jordan Bocanegra at a gas station along East Commerce on Sunday morning.
The standoff started around 2 p.m. Sunday at a home on Potomac Street, about a half-mile away, according to officials. Police surrounded the home and used negotiating teams to try and get Criollo to surrender. Tear gas was used by law enforcement.
The San Antonio Police Street Crimes unit worked with covert detectives to find Criollo, who was seen in the backyard of his home. Police say it wasn’t until around 1:30 a.m. that he surrendered.
The family believed Bocanegra, who is from Hondo, and the suspect had an ongoing dispute.
He was set to turn 20 years old on July 1. Family members described Bocanegra as a sweet, caring and respectable young man who loved his family and worked to help his mother pay bills.
