12-year-old Austin girl at center of AMBER Alert found safe

A suspect connected to the AMBER Alert is facing a charge of harboring a runaway child.

AUSTIN, Texas — The 12-year-old girl at the center of an AMBER Alert issued Tuesday morning has been found safe.

The Texas Department of Public Safety had said the girl was last seen with a male suspect in the 1700 block of Wells Branch Parkway in North Austin at 12 a.m. on Feb. 24.

The suspect was identified as Henry Mejia, who authorities believed was driving a 2017 red Ford Mustang with Texas license plate VVK 2712, with an Instagram logo sticker on the passenger-side window. The car also had aftermarket chrome wheels.

In an update Wednesday morning, law enforcement said Mejia and the vehicle had both been located. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Mejia is in jail on a charge of harboring a runaway child. At the time, the girl remained missing.

At 12:53 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said the girl had been found safe.
