12-year-old boy found unresponsive in water at Cypress Bend Park, remains in critical condition

The boy was transported to a San Antonio-area hospital.

SAN ANTONIO — A 12-year-old boy was rescued from the Guadalupe River in Cypress Bend Park on Friday afternoon, officials say.

The New Braunfels Fire Department and New Braunfels Police Department responded to a call in the 500 block of Peace Avenue around 3:40 p.m.

The City of New Braunfels Park Rangers arrived first and found a 12-year-old boy from San Antonio had been swimming in the Guadalupe River with family when he went under the surface for an unspecified amount of time, according to officials.

Park Rangers began lifesaving measures until EMS arrived and took over.

Officials said the boy was taken to an area hospital before being transported by helicopter to a San Antonio-area hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, and alcohol was not believed to play a factor.

This remains an active investigation.
