A man was arrested and charged with murder after police said he stabbed his girlfriend to death at their apartment on South Braeswood Boulevard.
HOUSTON — A man is facing a murder charge after investigators said he stabbed his girlfriend to death at their southwest-side apartment last weekend.
It happened Saturday around 8:30 p.m. at an apartment complex off South Braeswood Boulevard near South Gessner Road.
Jose Ignacio Diaz Pina, 31, is accused of stabbing Yoandra Gonzalez to death inside their upstairs unit.
Gonzalez’s 13-year-old son found his mother’s body when he got home from a trip to a nearby store. He’s the one who called 911, according to police.
What happened
Houston Police Department Lt. R. Willkens said Pina and Gonzalez lived together at the apartment.
While details surrounding the actual incident remain unclear, Willkens said Pina stabbed Gonzalez and then left the apartment.
When Gonzalez’s son got home from the store, the front door to the apartment was locked, so he hopped onto the patio and went inside through another door. That’s when police said he found his mother.
The son left and went to a friend’s house to call for help.
Responding officers were able to get to the scene quickly, and they found Gonzalez dead inside the apartment.
Pina wasn’t there, so the police started searching the area.
Willkens said Pina ended up calling police and telling them that he was surrendering at the apartment complex entrance. That’s where he was taken into custody.
Here’s the update Willkens provided at the scene:
What’s next
Pina was due in court on Tuesday morning. We’re waiting to find out what happened during the appearance.
