13-year-old detained, accused of bringing guns to Warren High School amid medical concerns

The juvenile judge told the girl’s mom the weapons were taken from a safe in the family home.

SAN ANTONIO — The 13-year-old girl accused of bringing two guns and a knife to Warren High School has been ordered detained by a juvenile judge.

The teen appeared in the 289th District Court before Judge Rose Sosa Tuesday morning.

Court personnel told the judge that the teen has never appeared in court before.

Defense attorney Anthony Cantrell said the girl has been under a doctor’s care.

“We believe that a new medicine that she started about two or three weeks ago has caused this to happen,” Cantrell said, adding this is out of character for her, “She’s had no referrals in the past and she’s actually a pretty good girl, so to speak, (this is) totally aberrant behavior on her part.”

The teen is charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Northside ISD officials said the teen, who is not a Warren student, entered the building with the stated goal of registering to attend school.

They said after questioning the teen, a search led to the discovery of three weapons, so she was taken into custody.

A probation officer told the judge the teen’s mom said she has several medical conditions and is awaiting additional diagnostic work, so they recommended continued detention.

Cantrell asked for the teen to be released.

“We’d ask that you place [the teen] in the care, custody and control of her mother so that she can get adequate medical supervision,” Cantrell said.

The teen’s mother did not offer a statement, so the judge questioned her about guns in the home.

Sosa said, “Did you know she took two guns out of your husband’s safe?”

When the mother said she did not, Sosa continued, “According to her, the statement she gave, she actually watched so she could memorize the code so she could get in and get the weapon?”

When the mother responded that she was unaware of what happened, Sosa announced the teen would remain locked up, adding, “Based on all that, at this time, I am going to detain you.”

The judge did instruct staff to make sure the teen has access to adequate medical care while she waits for the formal filing of her case.

November 12th is the next scheduled hearing date for the teen.
