13-year-old girl hospitalized after struck by vehicle on Overton ISD campus, 1 arrested

OVERTON, Texas — A 13-year-old girl was hospitalized after she was struck by a vehicle Saturday on an Overton ISD property.

According to Overton PD, officers accompanied Christus EMS and Overton Volunteer FD to a serious pedestrian crash on an Overton ISD property. Several other individuals were present, but none were enrolled in Overton ISD.

An initial investigation indicated the child was struck and became trapped underneath the vehicle. Bystanders attempted to free the victim and did not call 911 immediately. According to Overton PD, one woman took control of the vehicle and, in an attempt to dislodge the child, “intentionally drove over her a second time.”

“This tragic and reckless decision caused further injury to the victim and should never have occurred,” Overton PD added.

Emergency responders secured the scene and she was flown to a hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Based on footage provided by Overton ISD, the woman who drove the vehicle has been charged with aggravated assault. Her bond was set at $150,00 and she was taken into custody on Sept. 30. She is currently being held at the Smith County Jail.
