Metro Nashville PD said the fourth student received a facial injury during the shooting, but he was not shot.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Metro Nashville Police Department has identified the girl who was killed and the shooter who opened fire at Antioch High School.
MNPD identified the victim as Josselin Corea Escalante, 16, and the shooter as Solomon Henderson, 17.
Police said the shooting happened in the cafeteria on Wednesday morning. MNPD said Henderson shot two students and then shot himself. Responding officers found him dead.
Nashville Chief of Police John Drake said the shooter entered the cafeteria around 11 a.m. and fired multiple rounds, fatally striking Escalante.
A public information officer with the MNPD confirmed Henderson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said a male student received a facial injury after he fell but was not shot. A bullet grazed a 17-year-old student who has since been released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Drake said.
“This is a heartbreaking day for the entire Antioch High School community,” Metro Public Schools Director Dr. Adrienne Battle said. “My heart goes out to these families as they face an unimaginable loss.”
Battle continued to speak on the safety measures the school implemented, such as partnering with MNPD in hiring school resource officers and installing security cameras with weapon detection software.
However, she said, “Unfortunately these measures were not enough to stop this tragedy.”
Battle then announced that Antioch would be closed for the rest of the week as students and staff to grieve.
MNPD said there is a reunification site for parents and their children. Metro Nashville Public Schools said students will be taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital (3754 Murfreesboro Pike) by bus including car riders.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation sent HELP trucks to assist with traffic control in response to the shooting.
Metro Nashville Public Schools provided the following statement in the early stages of the investigation:
Families and community: Antioch High School is on a lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building. Metro Police are on the scene. The person responsible for shooting is no longer a threat. We will be gathering students in the auditorium and will provide information on reunification as soon as possible.
This is an active crime scene and investigation. We will work with the MNPD to provide further updates as they become available.
