18-year-old Ava Moore was killed Sunday after a woman driving a jet ski ran into her as she was kayaking on Grapevine Lake.
GRAPEVINE, Texas — An 18-year-old woman killed Sunday evening after being struck by a jet ski in a hit-and-run incident while kayaking on Grapevine Lake has been identified, officials say.
At approximately 5:20 p.m., the Grapevine Fire Department responded to an emergency near Oak Grove Park. Initial reports indicated that a person had been kayaking when they were hit by a jet ski.
The victim, 18-year-old Ava Moore, was pulled ashore with significant trauma, and first responders began advanced life support measures, according to a statement from the department.
Moore was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, where she was pronounced dead, officials announced.
Lake visitor Lisa Scrabeck had just gotten off a jet ski with her son when she heard reports of a crash on the lake. Scrabeck witnessed several men carrying Ava to shore.
“Once she came out of the water, I had them lay her down and started helping at that point,” Scrabeck said. “Started life-saving measures to help the young girl.”
Grapevine police released a photo of one of two women believed to be on the jet ski that hit Ava’s kayak. Authorities say one woman fled the scene with a male friend after the crash. In the process of leaving, investigators believe they hit another driver and abandoned their vehicle near the Cobblestone Apartments at Ruth Wall and Turner Road.
As of Memorial Day evening, officers were still working to identify the woman in the released image.
Police have not released the name of the second woman who was on the jet ski. That individual stayed at the scene following the incident.
Ava’s family shared a written statement through her father:
“We are grieving the loss of our daughter at this time….Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved, along with their families.”
The family also shared a second photograph of Ava taken on May 19, alongside her brother, after she received her appointment during the United States Air Force Academy Prep Graduation.
Grapevine Police are investigating the hit-and-run involving the jet ski and the abandoned car. Simultaneously, Texas Game Wardens are conducting their own investigation into the fatal crash. Authorities urge anyone with information about the crash or the woman in the photograph to come forward.
