18-year-old woman falls from SUV onto roadway, struck by fire truck, dies, police say

“The Escalade made a left turn, and an 18-year-old woman who was dancing on the roof fell off and onto the pavement,” a Sunday morning statement from police said.

ST. LOUIS — A woman died after she was struck by a firetruck in St. Louis late Saturday night, according to police. 

A witness told investigators that the woman had fallen from an SUV onto the roadway before she was hit, police said.

The woman killed in the crash was named by police Sunday morning.

“The woman has been identified as 18-year-old Nyla Simmons of the 1300 block of Orchard Lakes Drive,” police said. “This investigation remains ongoing.”

A spokesman for the Parkway school district said Simmons was a 2024 graduate of Parkway North and also attended Fern Ridge High School.

The crash occurred around 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of S. Compton and Chouteau, which places it on the border between St. Louis’s Midtown and Gate neighborhoods, police said.

Police said the SUV, a Cadillac Escalade, was stopped at a red light at the intersection.

“The Escalade made a left turn, and an 18-year-old woman who was dancing on the roof fell off and onto the pavement,” a Sunday morning statement from police said.  “Moments later, she was struck by a firetruck that was going lights and sirens responding to a call.”

The crash occurred around 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of S. Compton and Chouteau, which places it on the border between St. Louis’s Midtown and Gate neighborhoods, police said.

“All vehicles and drivers involved remained on scene,” police said.

Investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction unit were assigned to the crash, police said.
