2 charged with capital murder after teen shot, killed in New Braunfels

An 18-year-old, who is still recovering in the hospital from a gunshot wound, and 16-year-old have been charged with capital murder after a teen was fatally shot.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A 16-year-old boy was killed and an 18-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting Thursday evening in New Braunfels, authorities said.

Around 6 p.m. Thursday, officers with the New Braunfels Police Department were dispatched to Saengerhalle Road following multiple reports of gunfire. Callers reported they heard several shots and saw individuals fleeing from a residence in the area.

When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police said officers provided immediate lifesaving measures, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later learned that an 18-year-old man had been dropped off at Resolute Health Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was subsequently transferred to University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to authorities.

Following what police described as an extensive investigation that included interviews, review of video evidence and the collection of physical evidence, authorities identified two primary suspects.

Police said 18-year-old Jayce Cooper was identified as the shooter in the fatal shooting of the 16-year-old victim. Investigators said Cooper is the same individual who was dropped off at Resolute Health Hospital with a gunshot wound that he allegedly sustained from the victim during the altercation.

A 16-year-old suspect was also identified as being present and involved in the incident, police said.

A warrant charging Cooper with capital murder was issued as he remains in custody at University Hospital and is expected to be transferred to the Bexar County Jail upon his release from medical care.

The 16-year-old suspect was detained, charged with capital murder and transferred to the Guadalupe County Juvenile Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests or charges are possible, according to police.

Authorities are seeking information from the public and ask anyone with details about the shooting to contact the New Braunfels Police Department at 830-221-4100.
