2-month-old baby at Dilley ICE facility taken to the hospital, Rep. Castro says

A 2-month-old baby at the Dilley ICE facility was hospitalized for bronchitis but quickly released, raising concerns as his mother faces imminent deportation.

DILLEY, Texas — A 2-month old baby staying at the Dilley ICE facility in South Texas was taken to the hospital Monday, Rep. Joaquin Castro said in multiple social media posts Tuesday.

Rep. Castro posted on Twitter/X that Juan Nicolas, who is only two months old, was staying at the Dilley facility with his mother. Rep. Castro said Juan developed bronchitis and was taken to the hospital Monday night. At some point, he became unresponsive, his mother said. He was treated and released from the hospital in just a few hours, Rep. Castro said.

The Frio County Sheriff’s office said they were not notified of the transport to the hospital, but were informed about the transport back to the facility once Juan was discharged.

Rep. Castro went on to say that the baby’s mother went before an immigration judge this morning and was told she would be deported, but does not know when or where.

“We are all deeply concerned that Juan and his mom will be deported and that Juan’s health will continue to deteriorate,” Rep. Castro’s post read.

This comes after Rep. Castro has been highlighting the plight of children taken into custody and sent to the Dilley facility. In early February, 5-year-old Liam Ramos, from Minneapolis, was sent there with his father from their home. Castro was instrumental in securing their release and return to Minneapolis.

Castro also highlighted the case of 7-year-old Isabella Maria, who was in custody at Dilley but has since been released.
