A man is missing, and two teens are dead after a kayak overturned on the Trinity River. The search for the missing father resumed Monday morning.
SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Texas — A search resumed along the Trinity River on Monday, less than a day after a father disappeared while trying to rescue his son and one of his son’s friends from a capsized kayak, according to San Jacinto County Sheriff Sam Houston.
Deputies responded to the Camilla boat ramp Sunday evening after witnesses reported that a kayak had overturned in choppy river conditions and two teens were missing.
Houston said the father of one of the teens entered the water in an attempt to save his son and his son’s friend, but did not resurface.
The bodies of the 14-year-old and the 15-year-old were found later Sunday night, according to the sheriff’s office. The search for the 53-year-old father was suspended overnight and resumed at 7 a.m. Monday.
The San Jacinto County Game Wardens are leading the investigation with assistance from the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and local first responders. The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of family members.
Houston called the incident “an unimaginable tragedy.”
“Our hearts go out to this family and everyone affected,” Houston said in a statement. “We ask our community to join us in prayer for comfort and strength for the loved ones involved. I want to personally thank all of the first responders, Game Wardens, volunteers, and our partners from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office who have worked tirelessly through the night under very difficult conditions. The San Jacinto County community stands together in times of sorrow, and we will continue to support this family in the days ahead.”
Officials are asking the community to keep the family and all involved in their prayers.
