SAN ANTONIO — Two years after the murders of Savanah Soto, her boyfriend Matthew Guerra, and their unborn son, the wait for justice continues for Soto’s family.
Arrests have been made in the case, but Soto’s mother, Gloria Cordova, says the legal process has been long and painful — a reality she knows all too well.
Cordova lost another child in 2022. That case was not resolved until April of this year, when a conviction was finally secured. She says that experience has taught her patience, though the waiting does not make the grief easier.
“I just want to get it over with so we can continue grieving and missing my kids,” Cordova said.
Soto was reported missing just before Christmas 2023 after she failed to show up at a hospital for her scheduled induction. She was pregnant with a baby boy she planned to name Fabian.
The day after Christmas, San Antonio police found Soto and Guerra dead inside a locked vehicle at an apartment complex in the Medical Center area. Police said both had been shot during what investigators believe was a drug deal.
“There’s no reason to do that,” Cordova said. “To kill a pregnant girl — come on.”
Eight days later, police arrested Christopher Preciado and charged him with capital murder. His father, Ramon Preciado, was also arrested and accused of helping conceal the bodies. Christopher Preciado’s mother, Myrta Romanos, was later arrested on similar charges.
Last month, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office dismissed the charges against Romanos, citing the need for further investigation. Romanos had been sitting in jail, unable to make bond, but was just days away from jury selection in her trial when the dismissal occurred.
“I’m just going to leave it in God’s hands,” Cordova said. “If they did that, it was going to be for a reason.”
Cordova said community support over the last two years has helped her family cope, but certain milestones remain especially difficult.
“Her birthday just passed, and baby Fabian — that’s who we were looking forward to,” she said. “My daughter was ecstatic about having a baby.”
According to online court records, Christopher Preciado and his father are scheduled to go to trial Feb. 2. Christopher Preciado remains in jail, while his father is out on bond.
