SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested and accused of an April murder that left one person dead and another injured on the west side, SAPD says.

On April 19, officers were called around 4:37 a.m. to the 1600 block of Guadalupe Street for a shooting in progress.

When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Sabas Garza.

At about 4:42 a.m., another shooting call came out, this time at the intersection of South Zarzamora and Brady, a few blocks away from the other shooting. This call said a man had been shot in the leg and the vehicle he was in had crashed.

Investigators determined these two shootings were related, according to an arrest affidavit.

A witness told police he was at a bar on the 1600 block of Guadalupe Street with two friends, one of the being the victim who survived. The witness said he was involved in a fight with either the suspect or the suspect’s friend.

After the fight, the three friends walked toward their car. As they were walking away, the witness heard, “He’s got a gun! He’s got a gun!” They looked back to the suspect with an AR-style rifle, according to the affidavit.

The witness tried to deescalate and leave, but the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots at the group as they tried to enter their vehicle.

They were able to drive away, later realizing that the victim has been shot in the leg. As they tried to take him to a hospital, they crashed at the intersection of South Zarzamora and Brady.

Another witness told police he and another witness were hanging out with the suspect that night at the bar. The affidavit says the witness is a “close acquaintance” to the suspect. The witness also told police the group got into the argument with the other group, ending in the parking lot.

After the deescalation, the witness claims someone in the other group said, “Go get the strap,” prompting the suspect to get his rifle, allegedly firing a warning shot.

At this point the other group “backed off.”

The witness said the suspect shot “several more times” toward the group. He then saw Garza, who was standing nearby, fall to the ground. This was the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another witness came forward and told a similar story.

On Sunday, 20-year-old Julian Ramos was arrested and charged with Garza’s murder and aggravated assault. His total bond is set at $250,000.
