SAN ANTONIO — Almost four years after a deadly car crash on the east side, police rearrested the man they say is responsible.
On March 3, 2025, Daniel Telles was booked in the Bexar County Jail after being out on bond.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s office says he took off his ankle monitor, violating his bond conditions.
Telles faces multiple charges for aggravated assault, severe bodily injury to a child and manslaughter in the death of 80-year-old Antonio Martinez.
On March 31, 2021, police say Telles was speeding down the 2600 block of Rigsby Avenue doing 89 in a 40-mph speed zone.
Martinez was turning onto Rigsby when Telles crashed into his car. Martinez died on impact.
Telles’ car caught on fire in the crash. Police say he and his passenger Selena Hernandez jumped out of the car after the crash, leaving Hernandez’ 2-year-old daughter in the backseat.
Police say witnesses at the scene had to get the child, who was taken to the hospital and is paralyzed from her injuries.
Telles and Hernandez were both arrested.
“I’m glad this finally happened,” said Roberto Velasquez, Antonio Martinez’ stepson. “I’m going to go see what’s going on. Hopefully he’ll get the fullest amount of time he can. He deserves to pay for what he did.”
Living together with Martinez for years, Velasquez says emptiness lingers in the home and his heart.
“He took the best thing away from me and I’m always going to miss him,” said Velasquez.
Martinez was cremated at Meadowlawn Funeral Home.
Velasquez wasn’t able to pay for an urn for his stepfather’s ashes.
After speaking with the funeral home while reporting on this story, the business generously agreed to provide Velasquez an urn free of charge.
The Department of Family Protective Services says Hernandez’s daughter was placed with a foster family and later adopted.
Hernandez was charged with severe bodily injury to a child by omission. She’s on deferred adjudication and will be on probation until 2034.
Telles’ next hearing at the Bexar County Courthouse is Monday morning. If convicted, he can face life in prison.
