29-point outing from LA Sneed not enough as Wagner loses State Championship against Denton Ryan, 58-47

Despite having the game’s leading scorer, Wagner couldn’t hold off Ryan in the fourth quarter of the Class 5A Division I HS girls basketball Final.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Wagner’s girls basketball team lost to Denton Ryan, 58-47, in the State Championship, despite having the game’s leading scorer in LA Sneed.

The first quarter looked promising for the Wagner Thunderbirds as they had a 12-11 lead going into the second.

The Ryan Raiders came alive in the second out shooting the Thunderbirds, 50% to Wagner’s 20% from the field, making it a 26-21 score going into halftime.

Both teams came out firing in the third, with both scoring 12 points in the quarter.

The Raiders broke away in the final frame, out scoring the Thunderbirds by six points and never giving the lead back to win the State Championship.

The biggest factor of the game came down to the turnover differential, where Wagner had 20 in the game compared to Ryan’s seven.

LA Sneed scored 29 of the Thunderbirds’ 47 points, and was the game’s leading scorer.

Wagner ended the season with a district championship and an overall record of 34-4.
