On Feb. 9, Orange County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Orrin Landers responded to a 911 call about a 3-year-old child who was drowning.
When Corporal Landers arrived, he found the child not breathing and motionless. Despite the tense situation, he remained calm and performed life-saving measures, according to Orange County Sheriff Bobby Smith.
Thanks to Corporal Landers’ actions, the child began breathing on his own again.
EMS responded to the scene, and the child was airlifted to a hospital, where he made a full recovery.
“We applaud Corporal Orrin Landers for his significant and decisive response to a life-threatening situation resulting in saving a life,” Sheriff Smith said in a statement. “His commitment to public safety goes beyond his official duties, exemplifying the highest standards of our department.”
The child had been swimming at a location on Chimney Rock Drive, just outside of Orangefield, before nearly drowning, according to Orange County ESD 2 Assistant Fire Chief Josh Taylor.
The child’s parents were in the process of performing CPR when firefighters arrived at around 4:30 p.m.
A medical helicopter was called to transport the child to a nearby hospital after he suffered cardiac arrest due to nearly drowning, Taylor said.
However, the helicopter was initially unable to take off because a drone was flying directly overhead. The drone’s pilot was identified, and the drone was confiscated, according to Sheriff Smith.
Once the drone was grounded, the medical helicopter was able to take off.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but no arrests have been made at this time, according to Sheriff Smith.
