SAN ANTONIO — A family out of New Braunfels is in need of an accessible van to help support three brothers with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
Two of the kids rely on wheelchairs while the other is transitioning into a wheelchair full time. Francisco and Emerald Vargas say their homebound sons dream of seeing the world outside of doctor’s visits and school.
The goal the family is trying to reach is $43,000. Francisco Vargas says he would do anything to trade places with his boys.
“Having four boys is a wild house already,” Vargas said. “But having three out of the four being disabled is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do my entire life.”
Diagnosed at very young ages, for Christopher, Julian, and Geovanii – opportunities to explore California and Colorado are limited as they all are diagnosed with DMD, a progressive neuromuscular disorder.
“Just being able to hang out with cousins,” Emerald said. “And other family members, doing birthday parties where they can actually go, and have fun.”
From helping them get dressed to lifting them around the house and into the car, the journey has been difficult.
“Having one handicap child is enough,” Francisco said. “I have three. It’s not easy.”
Emerald and Francisco Vargas are working through the Jett Foundation, a nonprofit that specializes in fighting DMD, which is helping them fundraise for the accessible vehicle.
“The vehicle that we’re getting is very expensive, it’s not one handicap chair, it’s three so its gonna be big,” Francisco said. “It’s a big deal.”
The family has lived their lives letting the chips fall where they may. But now they’re asking for your support to help them reach their goal.
“All I want is my boys’ dreams fulfilled so they can have a little bit of normalcy,” Francisco said.
