320 teams around the world compete in San Antonio Rodeo BBQ Cook-off and Festival

Organizers are expecting between 15-25,000 attendees.

SAN ANTONIO — Food is bringing everyone together to kick off the start of rodeo season in San Antonio’s 28th annual Stock Show and Rodeo Barbecue Cookoff and Festival.

Organizers say they’re expecting between 15-25000 people.

320 teams are competing to make the best brisket, chicken and ribs for everyone to enjoy.

“We go by aroma, we go by taste. We go by. How it looks, the texture. So our judges will taste a bite and then they judge it based on a scoring system,” said Erin Sanchez, Barbeque Cookoff Chairman.

Wack’em and Stack’em is a BBQ team based in San Antonio that has been competing in the cookoff since it was created.

“There’s probably 40 or 50 banners in here of beans, brisket, all kinds of trophies that we’ve got,” said James Kinney, Wack’em and Stack’em Team 2 Chief Cook. “We get to have a little fun while raising money and that money then goes towards the kids and different scholarship opportunities.”

Wack’em and Stack’em set up shop on Wednesday and started the fire around 6 A.M. Saturday.

Jose Charneco and his 4 member team came from Puerto Rico to join in the fun.

“It’s one of the biggest event here in the United States and the camaraderie, being here in the international village, being here with other people, you learn a lot,” said Charneco.

Food lovers are able to try out the BBQ each team is making.

You can also enjoy live music tonight and vendors at the festival.

The BBQ cookoff and festival is going on all day at 1723 Creekview Dr until 11:45 P.M.

You can purchase tickets at the gate and rideshare is encouraged.
