$3M to support anti-gang program heads to San Antonio City Council for a vote

The proposed funding comes from DHS Grants to continue the Texas Anti-Gang Program made by Governor Abbott.

SAN ANTONIO — More than $3 million could soon go to gang violence prevention in San Antonio and it comes down to a vote Thursday in City Council.

The funding comes from the Department of Homeland Security Grants Division to continue the Texas Anti-Gang Program made by Governor Abbott.

The program is a collaboration between SAPD, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Texas DPS.

Three million will go to SAPD in part to hire six new employees. Two of the employees would be police officers.

The other four positions include a fiscal analyst, a crime intelligence analyst, a police program specialist and an analysis manager.

Money not going to staff will go to equipment, training, the building lease and professional and contract services.

This vote comes within a month of the massive November 16 raid off San Pedro and Basse Road. More than 150 people detained as dozens of agencies showed up to disrupt a local Tren de Aragua network, a Venezuelan gang.

Out of the 150 people detained, Homeland Security confirmed 27 were documented members of the gang.

If approved, this money will be managed by SAPD. City council will take this up during their session, which starts at 9 on Thursday morning.
