4 confirmed dead, several injured in major crash on I-20 near Terrell

Four people were confirmed dead in the crash, with two more suffering from major injuries and several others with less severe injuries.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A mass casualty crash took place on I-20 near Terrell on Saturday.

Terrell Volunteer Fire Department said Elmo FD was dispatched to a vehicle crash on WB I-20 just east of Hiram Road in Kaufman County at 2:40 p.m. Callers reported a major crash with multiple vehicles, including two 18-wheelers. 

Elmo FD requested assistance from Terrell VFD and additional EMS resources.

Firefighters arrived to the scene to find the crash, which involved seven vehicles: Three 18-wheeler tractor/trailers and four passenger vehicles.

Four people were confirmed dead in the crash, with two more suffering from major injuries and several others with less severe injuries.

Four ambulances, two helicopters and an EMS supervisor were at the scene. Patients were transported to Dallas-area hospitals for further care.

I-20 was temporarily closed along East and Westbound lanes by TxDOT, DPS and other law enforcement agencies. WB I-20 remains closed as of 6:27 p.m. as DPS conducts an investigation of the incident and will likely remain closed for several more hours, Terrell VFD said. One lane of EB I-20 has been reopened.
