In 2024, 13 inmates died while in custody at the west-side facility.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the jail’s first inmate death of 2025.
Around 8:40 a.m. Thursday, a deputy was conducting routine face-to-face checks when he found the unidentified 40-year-old male inmate “unresponsive.” The deputy reportedly began to perform life-saving measures while he waited on medical assistance.
Unfortunately, officials said the inmate was pronounced dead on the scene due to his “medical condition.”
In 2024, a total of 13 inmates died while in custody at the Bexar County jail. This marks the first since Nov. 12.
The inmate was booked into the west-side facility back in March 2024 and had documented a history of significant medical issues while he was incarcerated, the sheriff’s office said.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the inmate’s death was related to his chronic condition, but the Bexar County Medical Examiner will conduct a full autopsy, per procedure, to determine an official cause of death.
“In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is leading the death investigation, while the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a concurrent administrative review. Jail officials have notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards of the incident,” said BCSO.
