SAN ANTONIO — More than $26 million in grant funding is being distributed to support infrastructure projects in military communities across Texas, with a portion earmarked for San Antonio.
Greg Abbott announced the funding on Wednesday. Of the total amount, $5 million will go toward a major renovation project at JBSA–Fort Sam Houston.
The renovation is a partnership involving the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, the state and the Defense Health Agency.
In October, the city approved applying for the grant to help fund the $40 million renovation, which would house the Defense Health Agency’s administrative functions at the South Beach Pavilion at JBSA–Fort Sam Houston.
According to an October city memo, relocating those operations would result in cost savings for the agency and co-locate military medical functions, including Brooke Army Medical Center.
When complete, the project is expected to bring approximately 650 jobs to the region.
The city and county are each contributing $5 million to the overall program. As previously noted by city officials, two separate grant applications were submitted for the funding.
There is currently no timeline for when the renovation project will be completed.
