6 arrested in connection with murder of East Texas teenager

The document alleges that Hernandez and Mata, along with others, assaulted Ortiz by striking him multiple times in the head and upper body with a metal pipe.

CROCKETT, Texas — Two more adults have now been arrested in connection to the murder of a missing Houston County teenager.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office said Friday Diego Granados was arrested in Montgomery County, while Nicolas Espino was arrested in Ellis County. Sheriff Zak Benge said they have been working with the task force since shortly after the murder of 16-year-old Michael Ortiz to “bring these last two suspects to justice.”

Granados has been taken from Montgomery County Jail to the Houston County Jail. He has a $2 million bond. Espino remains in the Ellis County Jail as of Monday on the murder charge.

Four other suspects have been arrested in connection to Ortiz’s murder, including Edgar Hernandez and Emmanuel Mata, as well as two minors who have not been identified. All six suspects have been charged with murder.

According to an arrest affidavit, investigators believe Ortiz was killed between 9 p.m. on April 29 and midnight on April 30. The document alleges that Hernandez and Mata, along with others, assaulted Ortiz by striking him multiple times in the head and upper body with a metal pipe. Ortiz was reportedly killed near a storage building behind Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Crockett.

The US Marshal’s Service assisted in the suspects’ apprehension.
