70-year-old man seriously injured after vehicle rolls off cliff

The man’s pickup truck went down approximately 1,000 feet Friday evening, according to Colorado State Patrol.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — A 70-year-old man from Erie is in the hospital with serious injuries after his pickup truck went down about 1,000 feet off a cliff Friday evening, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

CSP said the incident happened just before 7:00 p.m. Friday on Interstate 70 near milepost 211, west of the Eisenhower Tunnel. The man was driving eastbound when he lost control of his truck, went over to the right shoulder and crashed into the guardrail — his truck then went over the guardrail and into an embankment, rolling over before coming to a stop on its passenger side, according to CSP.

The man, who was the only person in the vehicle, got trapped inside, CSP said. He was later rescued and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

CSP does not think drugs or alcohol were a factor in this incident; however, they said speeding is suspected.

No information was shared about the state of the victim.
