‘A betrayal of trust’ | Former Holy Cross coach fired after police say a hidden camera in his office captured students undressing

Police say another employee discovered the camera disguised as an alarm clock in the office they share. The 34-year-old was a part-time coach at the school.

SAN ANTONIO — A former Catholic high school coach is under investigation by San Antonio police after a coworker discovered a hidden camera disguised as an alarm clock inside his office.

The 34-year-old part-time coach at Holy Cross High School was fired Thursday night following the discovery, according to the attorney representing the school.

Police said the camera contained footage of the suspect having sex with another adult, as well as recordings of at least three students changing into gym clothes inside the office.

“We are shocked, and we are surprised,” said attorney Ricardo Cedillo.

Cedillo said the suspect had passed extensive background checks before being hired and had no prior history of complaints. The coach is not being identified since police have not arrested or charged him as of Monday night.

“To betray a trust in this fashion is unspeakable, and we hope that it is dealt with appropriately,” Cedillo said.

Cedillo said he received a call about the discovery around 8 p.m. Thursday. The former coach’s office is located in the school’s gym and is shared with another employee. According to police, that employee noticed the alarm clock appeared to contain a camera lens and an SD card.

The employee checked the card and discovered the videos, Cedillo said. SAPD was then immediately contacted.

“School officials have not reviewed the tape. We turned it over completely as soon as we knew what was on it,” Cedillo said. “We turned it over to the police and we’re cooperating with them, meeting with them.”

Cedillo said the other adult seen in the video with the suspect is not a school employee but is now banned from the property. As for the students, Cedillo said it was unclear why they were changing inside the office instead of the locker rooms.

“It shouldn’t have happened. One time is too many, but we are going to keep working to make sure it never happens again,” Cedillo said.

The former coach is also banned from school property and school events.
