SAN ANTONIO — When it comes to GameStop’s eyebrow-raising “Trade Anything Day” – a promotion that encouraged customers to literally trade in anything (with some exceptions) at their local store this past Saturday – Texans didn’t disappoint.
At least, one customer up in North Texas didn’t.
GameStop shared that the zanier items brought in for trade-in credit at locations across the country included a bowling ball, a “full creepy doll collection,” a speed limit sign and “Friends” on VHS.
Up in Corsicana, a small Navarro County community about an hour south of Dallas, someone received trade-in credit for a lanky taxidermied bobcat, according to the company. They were will within the promotion’s rules: While GameStop warned that things like hazardous waste, computers, drugs, jewelry, and dead or live animals wouldn’t be accepted on Saturday, the videogame store did say taxidermy would be deemed valid.
Upon news of GameStop’s promotion, the most common question on everyone’s minds was who would win the hypothetical sweepstakes for most out-there item brought in for credit. The Corsicano customer might’ve won that particular contest in only-in-Texas fashion.
GameStop said more than 80,000 items in all were brought in for credit on Saturday. Here are some of the other items:
- A goose
- A tiny Jesus
- Air Jordans
- A “happy heater”
- A framed dog portrait
- A literal can of whoop-ass
- A Wii Netflix disc
- Non-alcoholic cider donated to store employees
The company took to social media to share photos of other eye-opening items, including a stars-and-stripes biker helmet, gas mask and even a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
A company spokesperson said they gave out about $400,000 in $5 trade-in credit vouchers as a result of customers taking advantage of the promotion.
“Trade Anything Day was strange, sweet, and somehow perfectly us,” the spokesperson said. “Our customers showed up with big imaginations trading in a ball of lint, plastic spoon, tiny Jesus and even a bobcat. We are very happy with the turnout, and everyone will have to stay tuned to see if we do it again.”
