SAN ANTONIO — A cloud of Saharan dust is on its way to South Texas, the biggest to push through the Lone Star State so far this year.

The edge of the cloud is expected to reach the state around noon on Sunday before advancing into the San Antonio, Hill Country and Austin areas by that evening, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

As a result, skies are expected to be hazy and air quality levels moderately polluted that day in the Alamo City—meaning those who are particularly sensitive should consider limiting their time outdoors. According to the American Lung Association, though with chronic lung disease are one of the populations who are “at higher risk for development complications” from Saharan dust, though “everyone has the potential to experience symptoms related to dust exposure.”

To protect yourself on high dust days, the association recommends staying indoors; wearing a high-quality, well-fitted mask; using an air filter; and monitoring your symptoms.

The KENS 5 Weather Team is issuing Weather Impact Alert Days for Sunday and Monday due to the Saharan dust. But more are possible; more rounds of dust are expected to cloud San Antonio’s skies right up to July 4.
