CASTROVILLE, Texas — A new shopping center is on its way to Castroville.

The shopping center will be located right next to the Walmart on Hwy 90. Ulta, Ross, Burlington, TJ Maxx and Five Below are just a few of the stores slated for the center, which would be called Alsatian Oaks.

While the shopping center is still being built, many in Castroville have mixed feelings about the development.

“Traffic is awful now,” said Tristyn Hollander. “You know, you go outside and you don’t recognize the people, which is not always a bad thing. But, like, it doesn’t even smell the same, like people not from here wouldn’t know that, but it used to smell sweet, like, hay.”

Hollander’s family owns The Rusty Flame, a gift shop located in the heart of Castroville.

“Those shops are always going to be the cheaper option,” she said. “While I don’t think our prices are astronomical, there’s no way we can compete.”

Others however feel like the shopping center is needed. Like Analeise Kovacs, who has lived in Castroville her whole life. To travel to some of the stores, her options are San Antonio or Potranco.

“It’s definitely going to bring a lot more people out here,” Kovacs said.

The first phase of retail is set to open as soon as summer 2026.
