PEARSALL, Texas — A family of five escaped their burning home in Pearsall. They were able to get out with the help of a loved one. Sean Treviño raced to help save his family.
“It was a nightmare,” he said. “It was a nightmare.”
Treviño said on early Saturday morning, on Feb. 1, he first woke up the nightmare by his dogs.
“The dogs were barking nonstop,” he said. “It was a different kind of bark. “I look out my window, and I just see flames higher than the trailer.”
Without hesitation, he jumped out of bed to help save his family. They all live on a property off FM 1581.
“That’s when I just heard screams and running,” Treviño said. “I started breaking windows calling for them to come to my voice.”
His son, parents, brother and sister-in-law were all inside.
“I was scared and was hoping everyone was going to make it out,” he said. “It was just scary man. It was real scary.”
Treviño said there’s only one way in and out of the mobile home in Pearsall. He said a back window is where his family made their escape.
“My mom comes out first and them my brother and my dad are still inside,” he said.
He said his brother and father were looking for another family member not realizing she had already made it out.
“My brother and my dad would have died trying to save her,” he said. “And that’s what they were doing, they were trying to look for. I was trying to yell at them that she was outside already.”
Eventually, all made it out unharmed. But, some had smoke inhalation.
“The what ifs could have been worse,” he said. “Thank God they weren’t.”
However, the family lost pretty much everything, but the clothes on their back.
“Right down to tax papers, pictures, memories, everything is gone,” he said.
However, Treviño is grateful he can still hug his loved ones. He also added this reminder for others.
“Just to tell your family that you love them every chance you can get,” Trevino said. “Because you never know what could happen.”
Treviño said he wants to remind others to have an escape plan in their home. The Pearsall fire chief said the fire seems to be accidental and started on the rear porch. The family was in between insurance, and needs help as they will have to rebuild.
Treviño said, at the moment, they are looking for everything.
“We need everything from pots and pans,” he said.
The family is also raising money as well through GoFundMe.
