A search for the perfect match, Kingsville girl in need of bone marrow donor

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A six-year-old from Kingsville is searching for a bone marrow donor.

Emery was diagnosed with B-cell leukemia and is hopeful to find her perfect match.

According to the  National Marrow Donor Program, Hispanic children face high rates of blood cancer. However, Hispanic donors only make up 13 percent of life-saving bone marrow registries.

Leticia Mondragon of NMDP joined us on Domingo Live to tell Emery’s story and explain the process of bone marrow donation.

According to Mondragon, the registration process is simple. It begins with ordering a free cheek swab kit from the National Marrow Donation Program website. Registrants will also need to create a free account on the site and fill out their medical history.

Once a match is found, prospective donors will undergo additional health screenings, treatments and ultimately bone marrow collection at a facility as close as San Antonio.

NMDP covers all travel, lodging, meals and medical costs for the donation process, and also compensates donors for missed work days.
