Affidavit: Gun fired inches from employee’s head during violent south-side dispensary robbery; suspect arrested months later

Police say an anonymous tip generated after KENS 5 aired surveillance video helped investigators identify and arrest one of the accused robbers.

SAN ANTONIO — Nearly three months after a violent armed robbery at a south-side dispensary was caught on camera, one of the suspects is now behind bars — and investigators say media coverage helped crack the case.

Dantavea Roshun Mitchell was arrested Wednesday and is now charged with aggravated robbery in connection to the February holdup at Potheads Dispensary #2 on Pleasanton Road.

According to an arrest affidavit, the robbery happened on Feb. 15 at the shop located in the 3800 block of Pleasanton Road. Investigators say Mitchell stood outside the front door pretending he could not get inside. When an employee went to help open the door, police say Mitchell forced his way into the store.

The victim told investigators Mitchell grabbed her, threw her to the ground and struck her in the head with a handgun. During the attack, police say the gun fired, sending a bullet into the floor just inches from the victim’s head.

According to the affidavit, a second unidentified suspect then entered the store and began grabbing merchandise from display shelves. Both suspects later fled the scene, police say.

Police say surveillance video from inside the dispensary confirmed the victim and witness accounts. Investigators noted Mitchell was not wearing a mask during the robbery and had “very distinct features,” according to police documents.

The affidavit states that after KENS 5 aired the surveillance video, an anonymous tipster contacted police and identified Mitchell as a possible suspect. Detectives later used a recent out-of-state driver’s license photo to create a lineup, and the victim positively identified Mitchell as the man who attacked her.

It is unclear whether the second suspect has been arrested.
